Gymnocalycium Jap is a highly valued ornamental cactus plant.

  • Native to South America, these slow growing cacti are also known to be ruby ball cactus or red cap cactus. They got the name Gymnocalycium due to its colorful red top, which also refers to the flower buds that bears no hair or spines. Well, the lower green cactus could be of any varieties (mainly are Hylocereus cactus). Their main job is to display Gymnocalycium at its advantageous height. Gymnocalycium mihanovichii can be defined among varieties of Gymnocalycium cacti, Older plants sometimes flower with pink flowers during the summer, and many people may get mistaken by the colored ball on top for a flower, when it is actually the plant itself. Therefore, Gymnocalycium Jap (Aka Gymnocalycium mihanovichii) looks good for ornamental uses.

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is easy to care for.

  • They do well when kept in presence of direct or indirect light. Water them frequently especially during summer. When you plant them in small pots, then they need weekly watering. But in winter watering isn’t necessary. The soil on which they are supposed to be grown must have pH from acidic to neutral and well-drained. Avoid any kind of marshy formation. Ideal temperature for their healthy growth is 9 – 12 degree Celsius, and must not be less than 9 degree Celsius. And in terms of fertilizers, apply them once a month especially during its growing season.

  • All cactus plants are somewhat thorny with sharp spikes and could bear harm, when kept near childrens or pets. Even when taken care of, make sure to use Protective gloves too.
