The Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) holds a unique position in the plant world: it's beautiful, it flowers indoors with minimal fuss, and it tops NASA's list of air-purifying plants. If you want one plant that does it all — air quality, aesthetics, and ease of care — the Peace Lily is it. Here's everything you need to know to grow one in the UAE.
Why the Peace Lily is Perfect for UAE Interiors
Peace Lilies are tropical plants that thrive in warm, stable temperatures — exactly what UAE indoor environments provide year-round. They are one of the few flowering plants that thrive in low to medium indirect light, making them suitable for rooms and offices without strong natural light.
Light Requirements
Peace Lilies grow best in bright, indirect light but are remarkable in their ability to flower even in relatively low light conditions. Direct UAE sun will scorch the large, dark leaves. Keep them away from south-facing windows in summer. A position 1-2 metres from a bright window is ideal.
Watering — Reading Your Peace Lily
Peace Lilies communicate clearly: when they need water, the leaves will droop noticeably. While you should try to water before this point, the Peace Lily bounces back remarkably quickly after drooping. In UAE summer: water every 5-7 days. In winter: every 7-10 days. Use room-temperature water and allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Never leave in standing water.
How to Get Peace Lilies to Flower
Peace Lilies naturally flower in spring (February–April in the UAE) and sometimes again in autumn. To encourage flowering: ensure adequate bright indirect light, fertilise monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser, and keep temperatures consistently warm. If your plant hasn't flowered in over a year, move it to a slightly brighter position.
Humidity and Temperature
Peace Lilies love humidity and warmth — the exact opposite of what heavy air conditioning provides. Mist leaves every 2-3 days, place pots on water-filled pebble trays, or position near a humidifier. Keep away from cold AC vents and draughts. Ideal temperature range is 18-27°C.
Toxicity Warning
Important: Peace Lilies are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing oral irritation, drooling, and vomiting. Keep them out of reach of pets. They are mildly irritating to humans — wash hands after handling, especially before touching eyes.
