The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) has earned its reputation as nearly indestructible. Thriving in low light, tolerating weeks of neglect, and maintaining its glossy good looks in air-conditioned offices and homes across the UAE, it's one of our most-loved plant recommendations. Here's the complete care guide.
Why ZZ Plants Are Ideal for UAE Offices and Homes
ZZ Plants store water in underground rhizomes (thick root structures), meaning they can survive extended periods without watering — sometimes months. This makes them perfect for UAE offices where watering schedules can be inconsistent, and for residents who travel frequently. They also thrive under artificial lighting alone, making them ideal for interior office spaces without windows.
Light Requirements
ZZ Plants are among the most light-tolerant houseplants in existence. They grow perfectly in low indoor light, fluorescent office lighting, and indirect natural light. Avoid direct, intense UAE sun (which will yellow and bleach the leaves). This flexibility makes them perfect for placement almost anywhere indoors.
Watering in UAE Conditions
Less is always more with ZZ Plants. In summer: water every 2-3 weeks. In winter: water once a month or less. The #1 mistake is overwatering — ZZ Plants develop root rot quickly in waterlogged soil. Wait until the soil is completely dry before watering. A ZZ Plant showing yellowing leaves is almost always being overwatered.
Soil, Pots, and Feeding
A well-draining potting mix is essential. Mix standard potting soil 50:50 with perlite or coarse sand for best results. Terracotta or unglazed ceramic pots help excess moisture evaporate. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (March–September in the UAE) — no feeding needed in winter.
ZZ Plant Varieties
Standard ZZ Plant: Glossy, dark green oval leaves on arching stems. Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Raven': Dramatic near-black leaves that emerge lime green before darkening — a striking modern variety. Both are equally easy to care for and available in multiple sizes.
Is the ZZ Plant Safe?
ZZ Plants contain calcium oxalate crystals which can cause skin and mouth irritation if ingested or if sap contacts eyes. They are mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and wash hands after handling. This is the one caveat for an otherwise perfect plant.
