If you could only own one plant in your Dubai apartment, many experts would recommend the Snake Plant. Also known as Sansevieria or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, this architectural plant is virtually indestructible, releases oxygen at night, and looks stunning in any interior. Here's how to care for it in UAE conditions.
Why the Snake Plant is Perfect for UAE Homes
The Snake Plant originated in West Africa and naturally grows in hot, dry, and low-light conditions — making it extremely well-adapted to UAE apartments. It can survive weeks without water, tolerates air conditioning and low light, and lives happily in the same pot for years. In short: it's a plant that works with a busy UAE lifestyle.
Light Requirements
Snake Plants are extraordinarily tolerant of light variation. They thrive in bright indirect light and will grow (more slowly) in low light. However, direct, intense UAE sunlight through south-facing glass can scorch the leaves. A north or east-facing window is ideal. In offices, they handle fluorescent lighting with ease.
Watering Schedule for UAE Climate
This is the most important rule: less is more. Overwatering is the only reliable way to kill a Snake Plant. In UAE summer: water every 2-3 weeks, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter: water once a month is sufficient. Check by inserting a finger 3cm into soil — if any moisture remains, wait longer.
Soil, Pots, and Repotting
Use cactus or succulent potting mix, or a standard potting mix with added perlite for drainage. Terracotta pots are ideal as they allow soil to dry faster — important for preventing root rot in UAE humidity. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots visibly fill the pot. Snake Plants grow slowly and are content in tight spaces.
Why Snake Plants Belong in the Bedroom
Unlike most plants that release CO2 at night through respiration, Snake Plants perform Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) — absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen at night. This makes them exceptional bedroom plants that genuinely improve nighttime air quality. They also remove formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene during the day.
Varieties Available in UAE
Classic Sansevieria trifasciata (dark green with grey horizontal bands and yellow edges), Sansevieria trifasciata 'Moonshine' (silvery-green, very striking), Sansevieria cylindrica (rounded spear-like leaves), and Sansevieria 'Black Gold' (near-black leaves with gold trim). All varieties have the same care requirements.
Common Problems
Soft, mushy base or leaves: Root rot from overwatering — unpot, remove rotted roots, repot in dry mix. Wrinkled/curling leaves: Underwatering or extreme heat exposure. Pale yellow leaves: Direct sun scorching or severe overwatering.
