No plant defines 'tropical indoors' quite like the Monstera Deliciosa. Its large, dramatic leaves with characteristic splits and holes (fenestrations) have made it one of the most recognisable and loved houseplants in UAE homes, restaurants, and hotels. Here's how to care for it in Dubai's conditions.
Light Requirements
Monsteras thrive in bright to medium indirect light. They will grow in lower light but produce smaller leaves without the signature fenestrations. In UAE apartments, a position near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct harsh sun in summer which bleaches and scorches the leaves. North-facing rooms with good ambient light also work well.
Watering in UAE Conditions
In summer: water every 7-10 days when the top 3-5cm of soil is dry. In winter: every 10-14 days. Monsteras are tolerant of slight underwatering but sensitive to overwatering — root rot is a real risk in UAE humidity-controlled indoor environments. Always ensure excellent drainage. Yellow leaves indicate overwatering; brown, crispy leaf tips indicate low humidity or underwatering.
Humidity and Support
As a jungle plant, Monsteras love humidity — mist leaves 2-3 times per week in heavily air-conditioned UAE spaces and wipe leaves monthly to remove dust (dusty leaves are less efficient at photosynthesis). As the plant grows, it needs support: a moss pole or bamboo stake for the aerial roots to cling to will result in larger, more fenestrated leaves.
Feeding and Growth
Monsteras are fast growers in good conditions. Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser from February to September. In ideal conditions (bright light, correct watering, regular feeding), a Monstera can put out a new leaf every 2-4 weeks during growing season. Large mature plants can be impressive — allowing an annual pruning to control size.
Propagation — Make New Plants for Free
Monstera is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Cut a stem below a node (joint) with at least one aerial root or air root nub, and place in water or moist soil. Roots develop within 2-4 weeks in UAE's warm temperatures. This is an excellent way to multiply your collection or create gifts for friends.
Why Monstera Leaves Don't Always Split
Young Monstera plants produce smaller, uncut leaves. Fenestrations (the characteristic splits and holes) only develop as the plant matures — typically when leaves reach 20-30cm width. More light accelerates this. Don't worry if your young plant has solid leaves — they will develop with time and the right conditions.
