The Money Plant is one of the most beloved houseplants across the UAE and wider Middle East. Known as Pothos, Devil's Ivy, or simply the Money Plant, it's celebrated for its resilience, beauty, and the belief in many cultures that it attracts wealth and good fortune. Here's everything you need to know to grow one successfully.
Types of Money Plant
In the UAE, 'Money Plant' typically refers to two different species: Epipremnum aureum (Pothos/Golden Pothos) — a trailing plant with heart-shaped leaves available in golden, marble, neon, and silver varieties; and Crassula ovata (Jade Plant) — a thick-leaved succulent that grows into a small tree shape. Both are popular and both are easy to grow in UAE conditions. This guide covers Pothos.
Light Requirements
Money Plants are remarkably adaptable to light. They grow fastest in bright, indirect light (near a window but not in direct sun) but will survive in low-light corners, hallways, and even rooms with only artificial light. In UAE conditions, avoid placing them in direct south-facing sun where leaves can bleach and burn.
Watering Guide for UAE Climate
In summer (May–September): Water every 5-7 days, checking that the top inch of soil is dry before watering. In winter (November–February): Water every 10-14 days. The Money Plant droops dramatically when it needs water — which is actually useful as a built-in reminder. Always let excess water drain from the bottom and never let it sit in standing water.
Soil and Potting
Use a well-draining general potting mix. You can add perlite (10-20%) to improve drainage. Money Plants don't need large pots — they actually prefer to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots are visibly growing out of drainage holes, typically every 1-2 years.
Growing Money Plant in Water
Pothos is one of the easiest plants to grow hydroponically — in water alone. Cut a 15cm stem below a node, place in a clear glass or vase with fresh water, and watch roots develop within 1-2 weeks. Change water every 5-7 days. This is a popular low-maintenance display option in UAE homes and offices.
Where to Place Your Money Plant in UAE Homes
According to Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui — both widely followed in the UAE — Money Plants bring prosperity when placed in the south-east corner of the home or a room. Practically speaking, the entrance hallway, living room shelves, bathroom counters, and home office desks are all excellent spots. Avoid bedrooms according to some Vastu principles, though this is a personal choice.
Common Problems and Solutions
Yellow leaves: Usually overwatering — reduce frequency. Brown tips: Low humidity from AC — mist leaves or use a humidifier. Leggy, sparse growth: Needs more light. Pale, washed-out leaves: Too much direct sun — move to indirect light.
