How to Repot a Plant: Step-by-Step Guide for UAE Residents

Repotting a houseplant — removing from pot and placing in fresh soil in a larger container

Plants World |

Repotting is one of the most beneficial things you can do for a plant — giving it room to grow, fresh nutrients, and improved drainage. But it can feel daunting if you've never done it before. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process for any houseplant, with specific advice for UAE conditions.

When Does a Plant Need Repotting?

Your plant needs repotting when: roots are visibly growing out of drainage holes, the plant is pushing itself up out of the pot, soil dries out extremely quickly after watering, the plant has stopped growing despite regular feeding, or the pot has cracked or deformed from root pressure. Most houseplants need repotting every 1-2 years.

Best Time to Repot Plants in UAE

The ideal time to repot is during the UAE's cooler growing season — February through April. Plants are actively growing, temperatures are comfortable for root recovery, and the moderate conditions minimise transplant stress. Avoid repotting in June, July, or August when heat stress is extreme.

What You'll Need

A new pot 5-7cm wider than the current one (with drainage holes), fresh potting mix appropriate for your plant type, perlite or gravel for drainage if needed, a watering can, clean pruning shears or scissors, and newspaper or a tray to work on.

Step-by-Step Repotting Instructions

Step 1: Water the Plant First

Water your plant 24 hours before repotting. Moist roots are more flexible and less prone to breakage during removal. Dry, compact roots are brittle and difficult to tease apart.

Step 2: Remove the Plant from its Current Pot

Turn the pot sideways and gently squeeze the sides (if plastic) while coaxing the root ball loose. For stuck plants, run a clean knife around the inner edge of the pot. Support the plant's base as it slides out. Never yank a plant out by its stem.

Step 3: Inspect and Trim the Roots

Gently shake loose excess old soil and inspect roots. Trim any dead (black or mushy), excessively long, or circling roots with clean scissors. Healthy roots are white to tan and firm. If you find extensive rot, treat with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution before repotting.

Step 4: Prepare the New Pot

Place a small layer of fresh potting mix in the bottom of the new pot. Test-fit the plant — the top of the root ball should sit about 3cm below the rim of the pot to allow for watering without spillage.

Step 5: Repot and Firm In

Set the plant in place, fill around the sides with fresh potting mix, and gently firm in. Leave no air pockets but don't compact the soil tightly. Fill to about 2cm below the pot rim.

Step 6: Water and Place in Shade

Water thoroughly to settle the soil. For the first 1-2 weeks, keep the repotted plant in indirect light or a shaded spot — even sun-lovers — to allow roots to recover from any disturbance. Resume normal watering and light once the plant shows new growth.
