Propagation is one of gardening's greatest pleasures: the ability to multiply your plant collection for free, share plants with friends, or rescue a struggling specimen by taking cuttings before it declines. UAE's warm temperatures actually make propagation faster and more successful than in cooler climates — here's how to do it.
Why Propagate?
Build your plant collection without buying new plants, create personalised gifts for friends and family, preserve genetics of a beloved plant that might be struggling, fill out sparse plants by propagating and repotting with the parent, and learn to read your plants deeply through the close observation propagation requires.
Method 1: Water Propagation
Best for: Pothos/Money Plant, Monstera, Philodendron, Tradescantia, Begonia, and many herbs. Cut a stem just below a node (a joint where leaves attach) — the cutting should be 10-15cm long with 1-2 leaves. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Place in a clean glass of room-temperature water in bright indirect light. Change water every 5-7 days. In UAE's warmth, roots typically appear within 1-3 weeks. Once roots reach 3-5cm, pot into moist potting mix.
Method 2: Soil Propagation
Best for: Succulents, Geraniums, Roses, Ficus, and woody-stemmed plants. Take a cutting and allow it to dry for a few hours (or days for succulents) to form a callus over the cut end. Dip in rooting hormone powder (optional but effective). Insert into slightly moist potting mix or cactus mix. Keep in bright indirect light and mist soil every 2-3 days. Do not overwater — the stem needs oxygen to develop roots.
Method 3: Division
Best for: Spider Plants (babies), Peace Lily, Calathea, ZZ Plant (rhizome division), Snake Plant, and ornamental grasses. When repotting, separate clumping plants into 2-3 sections, ensuring each section has roots attached. Pot separately and treat as new plants. Division is the simplest and fastest propagation method.
Method 4: Succulent Leaf Propagation
Uniquely, most succulents can be propagated from individual leaves. Gently twist a healthy leaf off at the base (clean detachment from the stem is important). Lay leaves on top of slightly moist cactus mix in a bright, warm spot. In UAE's warm temperatures, tiny rosettes will begin sprouting from the base of the leaf within 2-4 weeks. Allow the parent leaf to wither naturally — the baby will be self-sustaining.
Propagation Tips for UAE Climate
UAE's warmth accelerates root development compared to cooler climates — what takes 4 weeks in the UK takes 1-2 weeks in Dubai. However, avoid propagating in direct UAE summer sun which causes rapid wilting of unrooted cuttings. A bright windowsill with indirect light is ideal. Use room temperature water — cold tap water slows root development. Keep propagating containers away from AC vents.
