Fiddle Leaf Fig Care Guide: Dubai's Most Stylish Indoor Tree

Fiddle Leaf Fig Ficus lyrata in white pot in a modern Dubai living room — the ultimate statement plant

Plants World |

The Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) is arguably the world's most photographed houseplant — and for good reason. Its large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves and tree-like silhouette create an architectural focal point that transforms any room. In Dubai homes, it's a status plant — beautiful but demanding. This guide will help you keep yours thriving.

Why Fiddle Leaf Figs Are Challenging in UAE

Fiddle Leaf Figs are drama queens. They hate: being moved, draughts from AC vents, inconsistent watering, direct harsh sun, and root disturbance. In UAE conditions, the intense AC, harsh summer sun through glass, and water quality can all cause problems. But managed correctly, they are spectacular and long-lived.

Light — Getting It Right

Fiddle Leaf Figs need bright, indirect light. A position 1-2 metres from a large east or north-facing window is ideal in UAE apartments. South-facing windows in summer can scorch the large leaves — use a sheer curtain to diffuse intense light. Rotate the pot 45° every 2 months to ensure even growth on all sides. Once you find a spot it likes, don't move it.

Watering in UAE Conditions

Consistent watering is critical — both overwatering and underwatering cause leaf drop. In summer: water when the top 3cm of soil is dry (roughly every 7-10 days). In winter: every 10-14 days. Use room-temperature filtered or settled tap water. Water slowly and thoroughly, then drain completely. Brown spots on leaves indicate overwatering; dry, crispy brown edges indicate underwatering or low humidity.

Humidity and Temperature

Fiddle Leaf Figs love humidity (50-60% ideal) — very different from Dubai's heavily air-conditioned interiors. Mist leaves 2-3 times per week, wipe dust from leaves monthly with a damp cloth, and consider a small room humidifier nearby. Keep temperature consistently between 18-27°C — away from cold AC vents and draughts.

Feeding and Repotting

Feed monthly from February to September with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Do not feed in winter. Repot every 1-2 years in early spring (February in UAE) — only go up one pot size at a time. The shock of a much larger pot can cause leaf drop. Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix.

Troubleshooting Fiddle Leaf Fig Problems

Leaf drop: Most commonly caused by a sudden environmental change (being moved, temperature change, overwatering). Identify the cause and stabilise conditions. Brown spots in the middle of leaves: Root rot from overwatering. Allow soil to dry completely and treat with hydrogen peroxide. Brown crispy edges: Low humidity or underwatering. Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or nutrient deficiency.
